i wake up each morning and lie in my bed
counting the leaves on the plants overhead.
recounting the joys of last night's tender love,
but he's gone and that's all i think of.
i have his strong arms to hold me, his love to enfold me,
but it's not all inspiring you see.
i need more than his hand, i need more than a man.
i need me, need to see who i am.
there are times in our lives when the path seems so clear.
and times in our lives when it's clouded by fear.
and as often as not, we forget what we've got,
while trying to please someone dear.
i have his strong arms to hold me, his love to enfold me,
but it's not all inspiring you see.
i need more than his hand, i need more than a man.
i need me, me to see who i am.
so, why are we women so anxious to give?
so often through lovers do we choose to live.
his ships all come in, mine are left high and dry,
while time passes like sand through a sieve.
i have his strong arms to hold me, his love to enfold me,
but it's not all inspiring you see.
i need more than his hand, i need more than a man.
i need me, need to see who i am.

Since encountering Gene's solo work (admittedly very late) in 2019, this and Out Of The Blue have been listening mainstays. Gene brings a remarkable lyricism and clarity to his performances. "She Wore The Red Shoes" has rapidly become one of my favourite pieces of music: hypnotic, alluring and very, very beautiful. Tristan Louth-Robins
